Functional Poché

USC graduate studio, 02-05/2019
Collab with Lucas Price. I co-designed, modeled, and did technical drawings in Revit.

Revit (Base, massing & Customised materials & families) + Enscape + Rhino + Illustrator + 3D print & hand cut mixed material physical model

Functional poche challenges the paradox between the urban consumer and the spatial limitations of the micro-unit typology. Functional poche consists of 140 micro-units, each between 200-350 square feet, and is located in the central commercial and cultural district of leimert park. By using formal techniques of folding, bending, and twisting, the interior surfaces of the units transform into functional cavities, whose spatial configuration caters to the occupant’s daily domestic routine. This system of pocket-spaces extends from inside to outside, and in doing so, become apertures directing sunlight into the units while providing views toward the dynamic public green space beyond.

Museum containing spacecraft

Individual project

Rhino + Illustrator + Enscape + Physical model

A space museum hosting a permanent exhibit- a spacecraft. It contains 2 gantries, 4 additional exhibition halls, a giftshop, service facilities.
Taking advantages of the existing condition on site to create solutions for on-site connections, accessibility, circulation, programming, egress & toning program-induced drastic rise of height and mass. Double facade system patterned according to sunlight distribution.

Skyscraper

Competition entry, 4-person-team, I co-designed and made all drawings & completed the digital presentation board.

Rhino + Illustrator + Physical model

We designed the skyscraper to be 12 floors high, swaying along an organic form grew from our research and abstraction of the form of the golden ratio with 2 central atriums intertwined, breaking and connecting the physical and visual spaces.

Public viewing tower & aviary

Individual project

Rhino + Illustrator + Physical model

Exploration of solid and void led to researches on materialities and textures. The viewing tower allows visitors to climb up to the top where faceted surfaces blur the boundaries of walls and floors. One may stand at the bottom of the tower and see the top through the cloud of layered peforations on fabric screens.

Cliffedge Residence

JTD Architects, 05-08/2019

Private residence

Schematic design phase (SD) - Design development phase (DD)

Autocad + Revit project

Took over a 23,652 SF private residential project sited on a steep hill, worked through modelling the DD phase and re-dimensioned the design. I had the height limits under close observation and continuously recalculated and monitored the project FAR with every design iteration, ensured the design to progress under building code.

I modelled the scheme changes using Revit and imported CAD information.

Rocky Terrain Corten Residence

JTD Architects, 05-08/2019

Private residence

Schematic design phase (SD) - Design development phase (DD)

Worked through SD phase on a 3,668 SF private residential project sited on uneven bedrocks and waterlines; supervised under project architect and attended the bi-weekly client meetings. I did code researching, translated point cloud raw data to Revit topography and analysed the limitations imposed upon the project by the site condition. I closely monitored core issues including project height that the design iterations had been causing and optimized the design.

Confidential mixed-use project B

Masastudio, 01-/2019

Confidential project

Design development phase (SD)

Collaborated with 4-person project team on a 257,840 SF commercial project in DD phase, created digital modelling iterations of customized furniture and generated more than 50 presentation renderings with Enscape.

Breathing Light

USC research project, 08-12/2019

I designed the project and managed a 5-person-team to realise the project in its 1/2 scale working physical form.

Revit (base + massing + adaptive components + customised materials and families, sheet sets) + Dynamo (multi branching & integrated scripting + multiple imported packages + customising multi-stage parametric components + customising materials + animation)

‘Breathing light‘ was designed and prototyped as a usc funded advanced research project. This project pushed the experimental boundaries of de-pneumatic facade system and resulted in one of the most complex and comprehensive deployable facade systems through the unitization of pneumatic and vacuum light-regulating components.

Chapel

Individual Project

Rhino + Illustrator + Physical model

‘Remnant‘ is a project that playfully drew attention to the concept of the ‘in-between‘ space. One wrapped around another, every space is an intermediary space in relation to other spaces. This project redefined the concept of interior and exterior, joining the two without confusing users.

Individual project

Rhino + Illustrator + Physical model

Created spatial experience with the splayed framing of perspectives and create indications for guidance of movements.

Space expanded and compressed, natural light siphoned and
diffused by layers of splayed skylight units to direct movement
and formulate controlled spatial experiences.

USC campus transportation node

Individual project

Rhino + Illustrator + Physical model

Studying the techniques of origami, I folded, flipped, tapered and hollowed the parasitical spaces with spread out attaching points on a grid imposed on two parallel rails- one along the top of the woodshop and the other on the floor. Imprints on the floor extended the structure.
